TL;DR
A dollar peg fixes the token's price, not your tax. USDC received for work is income at its value on arrival, in your filing currency, and withholding depends on the forms you hand over and where you did the work.
The reporting that exists, from Form 1099-NEC to DAC8, sits on clients and providers, so your own records carry the weight. Treat this as a primer, not tax advice.
Section 61 of the Internal Revenue Code defines gross income as all income from whatever source derived and lists 14 categories, compensation for services first. The IRS digital assets page names stablecoins as digital assets, treats them as property, not currency, and taxes a digital asset received for services in a business as ordinary income.
For virtual currency received as payment, IRS Notice 2014-21 says to include its fair market value in US dollars on the date of receipt, which also becomes your basis. The notice covers convertible virtual currency; stablecoin coverage comes from the IRS page above. Selling the USDC later is a separate reportable event with its own gain or loss.
Contractor pay is business income, so it also carries self-employment tax. Section 1401 imposes 12.4 percent plus 2.9 percent on self-employment income, 15.3 percent by our own arithmetic (12.4 + 2.9). For virtual currency received as an independent contractor, IRS Notice 2014-21 confirms its fair market value is self-employment income. No client withholds that tax, so set it aside.
Section 1402 excludes net earnings from self-employment under $400 for the year. Either way, the IRS page sends contractor digital asset income to Schedule C, and USDC pay means answering Yes to the Form 1040 digital asset question. Then price in self-employment tax.
Without your correct TIN, a US client must withhold from reportable pay. Under section 3406 of the Internal Revenue Code, backup withholding applies to reportable payments if you fail to furnish your TIN or the IRS tells the payor it is incorrect, and the IRS backup withholding page puts the current rate at 24 percent. You report anything withheld on that year's return.
Form W-9 gives your correct TIN to the person filing the information return; send it before the first milestone releases.
For payments made after 2025, the client's contractor reporting on Form 1099-NEC starts at $2,000 of non-employee compensation a year. For the client-side workflow, see how clients run 1099-NEC reporting.
If you are not a US person and work outside the US, you generally give a W-8BEN. Section 862(a)(3) treats compensation for personal services performed outside the United States as foreign-source income. The IRS W-8BEN instructions apply 30% to US-source compensation paid to foreign persons, and warn that not providing the form when asked may lead to 30% or backup withholding.
The form documents foreign status; US citizens abroad use Form W-9 instead. Work done while in the US uses other exemption forms, so get advice.
A W-8BEN generally stays in effect until the last day of the third succeeding calendar year, unless a change in circumstances makes it incorrect. By our own arithmetic (signing year plus 3), one signed in 2026 runs through 31 December 2029.
HMRC puts exchange tokens a trader accepts as payment inside taxable trading profits; the EU leaves income tax to member states. For crypto-asset tax reporting in the EU, DAC8 applies from 1 January 2026 and puts the duty on reporting crypto-asset service providers, with a parallel HMRC regime from the same date. Neither makes you the reporter.
HMRC's business guidance, which covers sole traders, says exchange tokens a trader accepts from customers belong in taxable trading profits. Profits are calculated in pounds sterling at the rate at the time of each transaction, and you record your valuation method.
Your cryptoasset provider can ask you for details under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, and failing to provide them may bring a penalty.
For crypto-asset tax reporting, DAC8 has a reporting provider collect your TIN, date and place of birth and a self-certification, and its scope includes stablecoins. Your member state sets income tax.
Both systems put the record burden on you. Section 6001 requires every person liable for US tax to keep the records Treasury rules prescribe, and HMRC's record list for cryptoasset transactions has 7 items, including sterling value and wallet addresses, with the onus on the individual.
Our own checklist, drawn from both lists, has 6 fields: transaction hash, block timestamp, token amount, tax-currency value with rate source, client and milestone reference, and receiving wallet.
USDC escrow on Sepolia runs on a testnet, and Circle states that testnet USDC has no financial value. This primer covers mainnet USDC.
The peg only settles the dollar price. Circle says USDC is backed 100% by cash and cash-equivalent assets and redeemable 1:1 for USD, but HMRC computes profits in sterling. Pound and euro filers can see a currency difference between receipt and conversion.
For UK individuals, selling tokens for money can be a disposal for Capital Gains Tax, though HMRC's proposed rules would exempt eligible stablecoin disposals from 6 April 2027.
Platform Signal. Freelancers on our Sepolia beta averaged <2h response times across 1,200+ profiles. Beta escrow runs on testnet USDC, and FiduWork has disclosed no tax-reporting or withholding feature, so these tax steps are yours on mainnet income.
Elsewhere, ask a local adviser five things:
Compliance corner. In the US, for virtual currency received as payment for services, IRS Notice 2014-21 treats it as property, included in income at fair market value in US dollars on the date of receipt. For crypto-asset tax reporting in the EU, DAC8, Council Directive (EU) 2023/2226, Article 2(1), requires member states to apply its crypto-asset service provider reporting rules from 1 January 2026. This is a general primer for the US, UK and EU as of 30 September 2026, not tax advice; confirm with a qualified adviser in your jurisdiction before filing.
